In the mid1920s Father Simon Buis, a Dutch priest-turned-filmmaker, trained himself in filmmaking in New York and returned to his diocese in Flores, Eastern Indonesia to make movies. His first filming efforts, pioneering hybrids of actuality and conventional "documentary" (in the Griersonian sense), provide us with a unique visual coverage of a vastly understudied region of the former East Indies.
